madonnelle, 2023
Embroidery 21.5 x 28 cm, private collection.
On the occasion of the 5th Small Biennale of Contemporary Art under the title «Roots» I created «Madonnelle», a black and white embroidery inspired by international stamps depicting Virgin Mary’s Annunciation.
The primary image corresponds to a Greek stamp published in 1973 on the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the miraculous icon in 1823 at the island of Tinos. This image was combined with a second annunciation issued in 1899 at the British Virgin Islands. Stimulated by the Marian shrines discovered on the Italian cityscapes and landscapes, I similarly create a public manifestation of faith and devotion on the streets of Mountados. A contemporary “Madonnelle” for piety and prayer in public space. On view at the location no 4 at the vault underneath Panagitsa church.
Made specifically for participating in «Roots», the 5th Small Mountados Biennale of Contemporary Art curated by Mireille Lienard, scenography by Philippe Fraisse.
Documentation of the location no 4, the vault underneath Panagitsa church where “Madonnelle” was installed and other spots around the village.
