super-x, 2023
Floor based, ceramic installation, dimensions variable, partly on a private collection.
“The title of Lea Petrou’s installation is named after a specific type of thread produced in this factory indicating its extra high quality and strength. SUPER-X (2023) is a gathering of peculiar totemic figures whose parts are inspired by an item that is somewhat the unseen protagonist of the entire factory. Detecting and studying the innumerable shapes and forms of plastic and wooden spools that are found in every single department, the artist reproduces, rescales and repurposes them. Constructing them with terracotta, Petrou elevates this ready-made found objects into sculptural entities seemingly performing a balancing act, a metaphor echoing the frailty and vulnerability of the textile industry. Resembling unified bodies, her sculptures come to light as living organisms that co-exist through the repetition of patterns and rhythm. Merging her sculptures with other found industrial objects such as a large scale, the artist generates a polyvocal exchange and raises questions concerning the identity, the past and the future of our current condition.” Catalogue text by dr.
